Black Swans are large, black, waterbirds, native to Australia, belong to the swan family. They are easily recognized because of their dark feathers and their red beaks. Their unique colors and their beautiful appearance make them suitable for zoos and garden.
Like most swans, a black swan has specific “S” neck shape and a large body. The bill is bright red, with a pale bar and tip. The legs and feet are greyish black.  Its wingspan can reach about 180 cm or more and it can weigh up to 10 kilograms. The male swans are usually larger then the female ones. While swimming, a black swan will lift its wings off its back to make it look larger. This is done to intimidate its enemy.
Like other swans, the black swans are monogamous. A male will choose a female and pair for life. Uniquely, some of the pairs are homosexual. They steal nests, or live threesome to get eggs and driving the females away after she lays the eggs. Generally, black swans nest in the winter months like February to September, sometimes in large colonies. The nest is a pile of grasses and weeds between 1-1.5  m in diameter and up to 1 meter high in shallow water or on islands. The nests are reused every year, restored or rebuilt as needed. Both swan parents take care of the nests. Like other swans, the black swans also protect their nests with their beaks and wings.
The black swans are herbivorous. It means they mostly eat plants, whether they are aquatic or marshland plants. In New South Wales, Australia, there is a certain leaf called reedmace, this is the most important food for them. While in Queensland, aquatic plants, stoneworts and algae are their dominant food. When they eat, they will dip their head and neck under the water, and keep their head flat against the bottom while keeping its body horisontal. They are also able to filter what they eat at the water surface.
